If your keyboard is locked on the Verifone VX520 credit card terminal, this article and video will show you how to unlock it.
I have found that the terminal locks frequently, by mistake, so if you find yourself running into this problem, you’re not alone.
Here’s the step-by-step process on how to unlock the keyboard and why it keeps happening.
FEATURED VIDEO
From the main SoftPay screen, you can access the menu to lock and unlock the keyboard by pressing the <number 8>.
Remember that if you hit the red <x> key in the lower right hand corner of the keyboard, you will back yourself out to the main SoftPay screen which is where you want to start.
So to unlock the keyboard, start by pressing <number 8>.
The terminal will prompt you for the password:
The password is:
1 – <alpha> <alpha> 6 – 6 – 8 – 3 – 1 – <enter>

Then, the terminal will ask you if you want to lock the keyboard and the options are:
- “Yes” (hit the F1 key)
- “No” (hit the F2 key)
It’s very important that you treat this question as whether you want the keyboard to be locked or unlocked.
To unlock the keyboard, select F2, or “No.”
If you want to lock the keyboard for some reason, then you would select the F1 key which is “Yes.”
On a side note, if you lock the keyboard on the Verifone VX520, the terminal will require you to enter the password every time you attempt to run a sale or a refund.
In some cases this may be what you elect to do if you have staff or employees that you want to keep from running a credit card transaction.
One final note, is that this happens all the time by mistake.
The way the terminal locks is by simply hitting the number “8” key as I mentioned above and if that is done, and someone mistakenly selects F1, or hits <enter>, the terminal keyboard will lock.
You need the password to unlock it so obviously if someone locks it by mistake, they have to call customer support to learn the password.
I hope this helped and if you haven’t seen our other videos on the Verifone VX520 credit card terminal, just click the link or search the website blog to see more!
